Frequently Asked Questions

Q01: What is PDF?

A: Short for Portable Document Format, a file format developed by Adobe Systems. PDF captures formatting information from a variety of desktop publishing applications, making it possible to send formatted documents and have them appear on the recipient's monitor or printer as they were intended. To view a file in PDF format, you need Adobe Reader, a free application distributed by Adobe Systems.

Q02: What is OCR?

A: OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is the process by which we convert your physical books into an editable text-based file format such as Word, TXT, HTML, etc. (Please note, PDF files are image-based, and thus do not depend on OCR accuracy. However, the PDF files will contain an OCR text layer behind the images to make the text searchable and selectable).

A: Sometimes when fonts are embedded or subset within a PDF, the original font information is lost and the text is corrupted. Although PDF Acrobat or Reader will still display correctly, the correct text information is not available. In these cases PDF-to-Text failed to extract the correct text from your file.

Q11: What is the advantage of using PDF Merger over an online service?

A: Three words: Security, speed, and size! With online services, you need to upload files to a server, which at times may not have the necessary security features in place to protect confidential PDF documents. With a desktop application, every part of the merge is done on your computer with no file size restrictions or security issues. In addition, running merges from your personal computer/laptop does not require an internet connection, which makes the process much faster than online PDF file merging.

A: Scanned PDFs contain only the image of text, rather than actual text. OCR is necessary to analyze the image and create editable text. Advanced PDF Utilities Free features an optional OCR module for editing your scanned documents, or PDF's that otherwise convert as image only. With the OCR module, Advanced PDF Utilities Free can convert immediately to any of the output formats available, such as .doc, .txt, image formats, and more.
